Matthew 22:37-40 is the answer Jesus gave when asked “What is the greatest commandment.” His answer was “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

How is this manifested in your life and what is your response to the unconditional love God has extended to you? This is what this book is all about. You can check out more at www.crazylovebook.com.

I am currently reading the book, “unchristian” by Davide Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons. It presents, from a vast amount of research, what the 19-29 year group thinks of christians. In chapter 4 of the book the author presents a number of misconceptions concerning evangelism. I would like to share them with you here and read your thoughts on them.

Myth: The best evangelism efforts are those that reach the most people at once.

Reality: The most effective efforts to share faith are interpersonal and relationship based. When we asked born-again Busters to identify the activity, ministry event, or person most directly responsible for their decision to accept Jesus Christ, 71 percent listed an individual-typically their parent, a friend, another relative, or a teacher. A majority of those decisions were described as conversations and prayer, while about one-third were instances in which their friend or family member took them to a church service or an evangelistic event. In an era of mass media, it is easy to believe that the more eyeballs, the more impact. But radio, television, and tracts accounted for a combined total of less than one-half of 1 percent of the Busters who are born again. The clear implication is that most young people come to Christ because of people they know very well, usually in the context of “everyday” interactions.

Myth: Anything that brings people to Christ is worth doing.

Reality: When you’re talking dollars, there is no price too high for a soul. But the problem isn’t just cost. In our research with some of the leading “mass evangelism” efforts, we found that often these measures create three to ten times as much negative response as positive. In other words, imagine your church is considering mailing Bibles or videos or other Christian materials to homes in your community. Our research shows that the “collateral damage” of doing so-those whose impressions of your church and of Christianity would be more negative as a result-is significantly greater than the positive impact on those who will respond favorably to these efforts. Moreover, such mass evangelism efforts are most effective with marginally churched adults, while outsiders are usually the ones who respond most negatively.

As Christians, we have to keep in mind that response rates are not the ultimate goal but rather the wise and careful stewardship of the image of God. Today’s media and technology create unparalleled opportunities, but they also wield the potential to harm the Christian image among many outsiders. If you create more barriers with outsiders because of your tactics, you have not been a good steward of the gospel. How we choose to share Christ is as important as our actually doing it.

Myth: We cannot worry about the possibility of offending people when sharing the truth about Jesus.

Reality: Obeying the command to make disciples does not give us license to offend people, especially when those offenses are actually inhibiting us from fulfilling that very commandment. Jesus used strong language, but who was he most likely to offend? Religiously arrogant people, not outsiders. Yes, the cross is offensive to people, but that gives us no extra motivation to be harsh or spiteful. True respect for people is a key factor in effective evangelism. The Bible specifically addresses this: ”The Lord’s servants must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone…They should gently teach those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people’s hearts, and they will believe the truth” (2 Timothy 2:24-25). This Scripture also reminds us that people commit to Christ because God changes their hearts.

Myth: People embrace Christianity because of logical arguments.

Reality: Most people, by personality, are not logical thinkers and are not likely to change their beliefs because of elegant argumentation or apologetics. Of course, some outsiders are wired this way, and thoughtful responses are particularly important for articulating Christianity’s remarkable ability to address all aspects of life. Culture is shaped by ideas and worldviews, so do not underestimate the proper role of good thinking, logic, and intellectual engagement. However, most people do not become Christians because of the overwhelming evidence. And since Mosaics and Busters are more likely to possess a nonlinear, fluid way of processing life, they are increasingly comfortable with subtlety, nuance, ambiguity, and contradiction. So even if you are able to weave a compelling logical argument, young people will nod, smile, and ignore you.

When we asked outsiders what the most important factor is in their faith, they said it is something that “feels right to them personally” (69 percent of outsiders said this was an important facet of their spirituality). Before you start lamenting this reliance on feelings, you should realize that 67 percent of Christians between the ages of sixteen and twenty-nine said this was important as well. Among young people, whether we like it or not, their sense of individualism, their loyalty to peers, and their emotional and experiential outlook on life guide their spiritual pursuits.

Myth: Everyone has an equal chance of becoming a Christ follower.

Reality: Based on extensive research on this topic, our data points out clearly that the faith trajectory of the vast majority of Americans is mapped out before they become adults, often before they even reach adolescence In fact, for every one hundred people who are not born again by the time they reach age eighteen, only six of those individuals will commit their lives to Christ for the first time as an adult. Of course, we have to always assume the best about people’s spiritual potential. God can do anything in anyone’s life at any time, and he often does. But consider how likely it would be for you as an adult to be persuaded to convert to another religion right now. You have to admit, it would take a lot to change your views dramatically.

Think of the implications of this. First, it underscores that Christians should prioritize the faith development of children, a unique time in human development when the vast majority of us “pick” a faith. Second, it implies that we must work hard to strengthen the often-tenuous faith of teenagers, because this is when their faith is gelling (more on this in a moment). Finally, it reminds us why respect for other people’s faith is so crucial. We are not likely to change another adult’s spiritual trajectory by a comment here or a small dose of Jesus there. If we really want to help outsiders see the unique freedom available through Christ, a simplistic get-saved message is an insult to their intelligence. We may think people just need a quick spiritual transaction, but this kind of overhaul does not happen without a person’s permission and the activity of the Holy Spirit.

Myth: We just need to help outsiders find a connection with God.

Reality: While it is true that God’s presence is life changing, most outsiders admit they are reluctant to have anything to do with this type of experience. Nearly half of young outsiders (42 percent) said they are skeptical and distrustful of faith and religion. Part of that skepticism is fierce independence. They don’t want to be whipped up into a state of emotionalism and reliance on faith. Only one-quarter of outsiders said they are looking for a faith that helps them connect with God. By comparison, this was the top motivation of young Christians, which confirms that this is a huge area of dissonance between those of us on the inside and those outside the church. We have experienced the presence of a living God, but outsiders are wary of feeling brainwashed or manipulated.

This post is not about Barrack Obama, Hillary Clinton or John McCain but about our own SBC election coming up at the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in Indianapolis, IN, June 10-11, 2008.

Currently there are six men who will have their names placed in nomination for this office; Johnny Hunt, Bill, Wagner, Avery WIllis, Les Puryear, Wiley Drake, and Frank Cox. To be honest I think this is pretty exciting. Very unbaptist in that I have “never seen this before!” The question, for each of the messengers present, will be, “Who should I vote for?” I would like to share with you who I would vote for and why.

All of these men are qualified to serve. They have an unbelievable amount of service to our convention and to the Lord Jesus Christ. Yet, we still have to choose one. I would vote for Avery Willis. In a recent Baptist Press interview, he, along with all the other candidates were asked the queston, “If you are elected, what would be your priority message for Southern Baptists?” His answer, in my opinion, hit the nail on the head.

“Southern Baptists need a spiritual resurgence to become a people after God’s own heart who return to Him in repentance, follow Jesus in discipleship and bring the Bible to life through authentic lifestyles and actions, resulting in our telling God’s story to people everywhere and making disciples of all nations.”

When only 40% of most SBC church members attend church on any given Sunday, when only 2.3% of Christ followers, according to Dave Ramsey in Financial Peace University, tithe, when we admit that our churches are not affecting our communities I think the problem is, “we have met the enemy and it is us!”

I once had a friend who had the courage to look me in the eye, when I was complaining about what others were doing/not doing, and said, “Paul, I think it is time you look in the mirror.” He was right and I wept. In fact he joined me on the floor as I wept and repented. That single act changed my life direction. It is time we, as a convention, look in the mirror and admit in order for God to effectively use us we must repent, refresh and reclaim Him as Lord of our lives. One man’s opinion!

2:1 Why do the nations rage [3]
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”

4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6 “As for me, I have set my King
on Zion, my holy hill.”

7 I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You shall break [4] them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Many times we, as Christ followers or even simply as citizens, wonder if involving ourselves in the public arena, especially in the political arena, has any positive affect. I would like to share with you an article from the Wisconsin Right to Life Newsletter for Richland County that demonstrates it does make a difference.

A PROUD DAY FOR PRO-LIFERS
On Feb. 27, a hearing was held on Senate bill 398 to repeal Wisconsin’s long-standing abortion ban (s940.04). Over 500 right-to-lifers flocked to the capital to take a stand for the unborn. Planned Parenthood knows that when Roe v. Wade is overturned, s. 940.04 will shut down WI abortion mills! The fact that they are backing legislation to repeal this ban shows how fearful they are of this becoming a reality. Our Richland County chapter organized over 50 people to attend this event and what a blessing it was to all involved! Concerned pro-lifers from all over the state joined together to fill 3 conference rooms! The side of truth greatly outnumbered those representing Planned Parenthood and its allies. Perhaps the most memorable moment was seeing the great number of young people who came to represent their generation. Teens testified, wore pro-life t-shirts, and shared in the fellowship of this historic day. Of the 7 committee members, there were 3 votes for and 3 votes against SB 398. Sen. Kathleen Vinehout decieded that she would vote against, giving us 4 votes needed to defeat the bill in committee. Barbara Lyons, Executive Director of WRTL, credits the 500 plus people who showed up to the hearing as the influencing factor for Sen. Vinehout. To God be the glory! (reprinted by permission)

You can and do make a difference. I would encourage you, at the very least, make sure you vote!

“Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God” (2 Timothy 1:8).

Do not hinder it
“Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ” (1 Corinthians 9:12b).

Do not be ashamed of it
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16a).

Preach it
“For it I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:16).

Be empowered by it
“For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake” (1 Thessalonians 1:5).

Guard it
“I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than we have preached to you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:6-8).

I have struggled recently, in our church planting efforts. I suppose this is true of all church planters but it is reality for me at this time. That said, I have been very encouraged in the last 3 days. I have received emails from people that I have not met who are praying for Heartland Church. I have been in contact with people in other states who have a desire to assist us here. My director of missions has listened and encouraged me. Today I received an email from a missionary friend who shared about prayer.

Prayer, to me, is one of the most difficult of the spiritual disciplines but also one of the most, if not the most important. I pray the thoughts below will encourage you as they have me. When you finish please say a prayer for Heartland Church and its vision to begin a church that plants other churches:

“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore, beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.”Matthew 9:37-38
We have talked often about these verses, but as I was rereading Matthew this week, I noticed something that had previously escaped my attention. In the preceeding verse, we find Jesus “seeing the multitudes” and feeling “compassion for them, because they were distressed and downcast like sheep without a shepherd.”

Who saw the need? Jesus.

Who pointed it out to the disciples? Jesus.

Who is the one who sends out workers? Jesus.

What did he tell the disciples to do? ASK Him to send out workers!

Does that strike you as odd? Jesus was the one who observed the need AND He is the one who can meet the need. Why, then, would He bother to point it out to the disciples and ask them to pray? Why not simply start calling out workers without the “middle-man” of the praying disciples? All I can figure out is the He really wants us to be involved through prayer!! Could we even dare suggest that He may wait on our prayer involvment before He calls out workers?

I think you will enjoy this. To understand the context, I went outside this morning, about 8:30 am, to start my truck and thought to myself, “Wow, its pretty nice out (it has been very cold lately).” I then started my truck and went back inside the house to hear the radio weatherman announce that it was 8 degrees below zero! Something is wrong when you can think that -8 is comfortable.

Cold is Relative……….and a good part of this is true

60 above zero:Floridians turn on the heat. People in Wisconsin plant gardens.

50 above zero:Gulf Coast people shiver uncontrollably. People in Milwaukee sunbathe.

40 above zero:English cars won’t start. People in Wisconsin drive with the windows down.

32 above zero:Distilled water freezes. The water in Green Bay gets thicker.

20 above zero:Floridians don coats, thermal underwear, gloves, and wool hats. People in Wisconsin throw on a flannel shirt.

15 above zero:New York landlords finally turn up the heat. People in Wisconsin have the last cookout before it gets cold.

Zero:People in Miami all die. Wisconsinites close the windows.

10 below zero:Californians fly away to Mexico. People in Wisconsin get out their winter coats.

25 below zero:Hollywood disintegrates. The Girl Scouts in Wisconsin are selling cookies……….door to door.

40 below zero:Washington DC runs out of hot air. People in Wisconsin let the dogs sleep indoors.

100 below zero:Santa Claus abandons the North Pole. Wisconsinites get upset because they can’t start the Mini-Van.

460 (-459.67 F below zero):ALL atomic motion stops (absolute zero, zero on the Kelvin scale.) People in Wisconsin start saying…”Cold ’nuff fer ya?”
